Philip’s experience in teaching includes:
As a Private Teacher since 1976; For the Menuhin Foundation of Bermuda (1976 - 1982)
As Head of Strings at Westminster School London (1982/83);
At Junior Department of Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now Royal
Conservatoire of Scotland);
At Edinburgh Napier University and Edinburgh University since 1998.
Private lessons in violin and viola are available to people of all ages and levels of ability. All lessons are entirely unique - as Philip says, "I feel it's very important to tailor the lessons according to the individual needs of the particular student."
In practice this can mean, for example:
An intensive series of lessons in preparation for an examination, an audition for an orchestral position or a place on a Youth Orchestra Course.
A refresher course of lessons when returning to playing after a period with no lessons or simply coming to focus on one particular aspect of playing and music.
These lessons can be geared towards either general or specific aspects of playing. It may be necessary to sort out various technical problems or how to approach the study of a new piece. The works to be studied can be from the solo violin/viola repertoire or from the chamber and/or orchestral repertoire. It may even be music from other genres.
Philip is also available to take on supply teaching on varying timescales when the regular teachers are absent in schools and colleges.
