Philip ist ein ausgezeichneter Geigenlehrer. Besonders hervorzuheben ist seine Fähigkeit, sich auf seine individuellen Studenten einzustellen und deren Stärken hervorzubringen. Philip has a very rare gift of communication. I've heard his quartet colleagues discuss it, but I've also experienced it myself, both in the apprentice sessions at the Variations week in Ullapool, as well as in chamber music sessions where he's been the coach.
He can hold a group together without saying a word. As a coach and as a teacher he's also very good at focussing on what it's possible to improve - in one's playing or in ensemble music - so that amateur musicians can push their own boundaries further.
He finds something to praise and encourage in a way that feels very sincere, and he makes you want to go on and work harder in music. And then he shows you how you can.

Violin lessons with Philip are an enlightening experience and all my earlier joys of playing the violin have been rediscovered (even though the practising is hard work!). He has been happy to go back to basics with me and has such a wealth of experience, musical knowledge and technique to pass on.

I met Philip when I was a very rusty beginner and I have been getting regular lessons from him since 2002. He always has a very encouraging, friendly and unfrightening approach while still challenging me to try pieces I thought would be beyond me.
Within the structure of a lesson, he is very flexible in what we focus on and I always leave feeling very positive and looking forward to the next one, even if I might be making slow progress.
Under his guidance I have plucked up the courage to play chamber music with other amateur musicians, and I would really recommend him as a violin teacher.
